Technological Developments - TJ New (B4)
Throughout the period of WWII, the technology changed for the better. This is especially in the case for war technology. Many weapons were created and improved. However, there were also
Penicillin:
Ford, an Independent researcher and biologist, said this quote when speaking about the public research and release of penicillin.
As seen in the picture above, penicillin has been changed from a shot into a pill form. It used to be in the form of a shot. That is what a form of modern penicillin may look like.
"This admirable 'M+B' from which I did not suffer any inconvenience, was used at the earliest moment and after a week's fever the intruders were repulsed." (Winston Churchill).
The above quote is a statement from Winston Churchill after he took "M+B". M+B at the time was the company that sold penicillin. This is significant because the world trusted the American invention to use on their own political leaders. Penicillin, made in the US, became extremely successful invention that helped both the public and the war. This could be used to treat strep throat, gonorrhea, and even pneumonia (which is what Churchill had when he took M+B). This helped the public with general illness, as well as it helped the soldiers treat wounds and infections.
- Originally made in the 1800's, penicillin didn't make its public debut until the time of WWII.

The Anti G-Suit:
- The anti-gravity suit allowed for fighter pilots to withstand more pressure in the air than they could before. This was used to stop pilots from going unconscious midair, also known as “G-LOC”. This benefitted the pilots of WWII immensely. The number of pilots dying from G-LOC decreased due to this invention.
- Developed at the University of Toronto in Canada by Wilbur R. Franks (Bottom Left Picture). This gave extra padding to the pilots of fighter planes.
- In the first picture (the colored one), it depicts a soldier during Vietnam wearing the anti g suit. This shows that this suit stayed around for many years after its invention. However, the styles and some mechanics changed in the suit.
- The second picture is of the first planes and ships to carry the anti g suits. These show that they were actually used during WWII and that they were useful.
- On the right, there is a picture of a group of people testing out the anti g suit. After lots of testing, the anti g suit was finally released to the military for fighter pilots.
"Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds." (Oppenheimer).
This was a drastic military strategy, however, when compared to the vicious invasions of the axis powers (Italy → Ethiopia; Germany → Poland; Japan → China), didn’t seem so bad. The damage at the time was bad, especially when looking at the photograph above. When comparing it to both sides, America viewed it as a necessary evil and Japan viewed it as the end of the war.
Formally known as the Manhattan project, this atomic bomb research project was going to be the doom of Japan. The first bomb, known as “little boy” was dropped on Hiroshima. The second bomb, known as “fat man” was dropped on Nagasaki after Japan refused to surrender. Finally on August 15th, the Japanese finally surrendered to the US because of the heavy amounts of bombing. This was a strategy to finally end WW2 and cause Japan to lose its drive and surrender.
The damage was catastrophic, so this really turned the tides of the war. Seen in the photo above, there was barely anything left after the explosions. This is the farthest the US has ever gone to silence an enemy. It was also very significant because it began a global nuclear age. This advance in technology was later responsible for the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Cold War.

The Enola Gay
- This was the plane that dropped the atomic bomb on Nagasaki. This was the bomb that ended WWII,
- There was some trouble during the flight to drop the bomb. They had to reconnect the bomb during the flight over there.
- This picture above shows the crew before they leave to drop the bomb. It doesn't show the extent of the damage in Japan, but only the joy that

- The footage from the bomb showed how bad the damage really was. The clouds of smoke were tremendous, and so was the initial damage. It wiped out many buildings and burned many people within a few miles from ground zero.

- In the link shown above, scientists recently have analyzed the effects of the atomic bomb on Japanese people many years after the bombing. This shows that the attack was much worse than intended.
