Reaction of the U.S
Reaction of Argentina
Before the Holocaust, Argentina and other Latin American countries were more open to the idea of immigration, but as the holocaust started and more jews and immigrants were seeking refuge, these countries became stricter towards visas and the amount of foreigners they would allow. Similar to the U.S, the immigration policies intensified and the number of immigrants decreased from previous years. Argentina and the U.S had very similar mindsets during the holocaust because they both feared anti-semitism and economic issues. The laws were so strict that Argentina, who previously accepted about 79,000 immigrants, reduced the number to 24,000 which was a big change throughout Latin America. This didn't include the number of immigrants that illegally crossed from surrounding countries. This helped in short term because Argentina didn't have to worry about competition. After the Holocaust, much like the U.S, Argentina and the rest of Latin America started to release the tension of the immigration laws and allowed more jews and foreigners to be admitted into the country. During the recovery period following the Holocaust, Argentina became a hot spot for refugees and there were more than 20,000 jews placed in DP camps. This helped in the long run because immigrants had a place to go and many resided in Argentina. |
